PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
|
| SEEDS |
2nd-3rd |
Students learn about the many varieties of seeds,
the uses of seeds, including the many kinds if seeds people eat. They
also explore the parts of a seed and how seeds travel. Finally, students
plant special seeds as they create their own "Chia-People" |
| INSECTS |
2nd-3rd |
In this program, students learn about all the
different parts of an insect and what makes insects unique from other
animals. They then learn about beekeeping and get an up-close look (and
feel!) of several harmless, large rainforest insects. The lesson concludes
with a honey taste test. |
| OWLS |
3rd-5th |
After learning about the many special adaptations that owls use to
hunt and survive in the woods, students work in pairs to dissect a real
owl pellet (a sort of "hairball" that owls spit up.) Students explore
real fur and bones as they learn about food chains.
|
| MATTER |
3rd-5th |
During this lesson, students get hands on demonstrations
that show what matter is and the differences between solids, liquids,
and gases. A gas powered cannon is then constructed. As a final demonstration,
each student makes their own batch of a polymer slime to take home.
|
| ELECTRICITY |
4th-5th |
This program demonstrates where electricity originates and how it
is used to power motors and make toast. Students learn how a battery
makes electricity and how lightbulbs work. The program wraps up with
the demonstration of a 500,000 volt lightning storm.
|
| MINERALS |
4th-5th |
Each student will get their own mineral kit to use as they learn what
a mineral is, how scientists tell one mineral from another, and the
many ways that minerals are used in our everyday lives.
|
|
All programs are
45-60 minutes long and each lesson has a hands-on activity for each
student to participate in. (except the electricity program)
